Best Blinds for Irish Homes: A Practical Room-by-Room Guide
Irish homes have their own set of challenges โ changing light, damp weather, condensation, privacy concerns, and heat loss. After 25+ years fitting blinds across Galway, Mayo, and the West of Ireland, we've put together this practical room-by-room guide to help you choose blinds that actually work.
Why Irish homes need different blinds
Most blinds advice online is written for homes in the UK or mainland Europe. Irish homes โ particularly along the west coast โ deal with a unique combination of high humidity, heavy condensation, Atlantic weather, and older building stock that makes choosing the right blinds more important than it sounds.
The wrong blinds in the wrong room don't just look bad. They warp, grow mould, lose their shape, and end up costing you more when you have to replace them after 18 months. The right blinds, fitted properly, will last 10โ15 years and make a genuine difference to comfort, privacy, and energy bills.
Changing light
West-facing rooms in Galway get intense evening sun in summer but very little in winter. You need blinds that adapt.
Damp & condensation
Irish humidity sits around 80%. Condensation on windows soaks into fabric blinds daily, causing mould and warping.
Privacy
Street-facing windows in terraced houses and estates need privacy without blocking all natural light.
Heat loss
Windows are the biggest source of heat loss. The right blinds can noticeably reduce your heating bills.
Room-by-room guide
Every room has different challenges. Here's what we recommend based on 25+ years fitting blinds in homes across Galway and Mayo.
Living Room
โ Vision blinds or plantation shuttersThe living room is where you spend most of your waking hours, so getting the blinds right here matters. Vision blinds (day & night blinds) are our most popular choice for living rooms across Galway โ they let you fine-tune privacy and light throughout the day without making the room feel dark. When the sheer strips align you get soft filtered light; when the opaque strips overlap you get full privacy from the street. Plantation shutters are the premium option โ they look stunning, last decades, and give you complete control over light and airflow. Particularly popular in the period homes around Salthill and the Latin Quarter.
Bedroom
โ Blackout roller blinds or Perfect FitBedrooms need darkness for sleep โ it's that simple. Blackout roller blinds block 100% of light and the coated fabric handles overnight condensation well. They're our most-fitted bedroom product across Galway, especially in west-facing rooms around Knocknacarra, Barna, and Salthill where summer evenings are bright until after 10pm. Perfect Fit blinds are another excellent bedroom option if you have uPVC windows โ they sit flush inside the frame with no light gaps around the edges, and the no-drill fitting means no damage to window frames.
Kitchen
โ Moisture-resistant roller blindsKitchens generate steam, grease, and splashes โ standard fabric blinds won't last. PVC or polyester roller blinds are the smart choice. They wipe clean in seconds, resist moisture, and won't absorb cooking smells. We fit moisture-resistant rollers in kitchens across Galway every week โ they're practical, affordable, and come in a huge range of colours. For kitchens with large windows or patio doors, vertical blinds in PVC fabric are another solid option.
Bathroom
โ PVC roller blinds or composite shuttersBathrooms are the dampest room in the house. Standard fabric blinds will develop mould within months. PVC roller blinds handle bathroom humidity without any issues โ they're waterproof, easy to clean, and affordable. Composite plantation shutters are the premium bathroom option โ they look stunning and won't warp no matter how much steam you throw at them. We fit a lot of composite shutters in Galway bathrooms, particularly in the renovated period homes around Salthill and Renmore.
Children's Room
โ Cordless blackout roller or Perfect FitSafety comes first in children's rooms. Looped cords and chains are a serious strangulation risk for young children. All our blinds are available with child-safe options โ cordless spring-loaded mechanisms, wand controls for verticals, or Perfect Fit blinds that are fully enclosed in the window frame with no exposed cords at all. Blackout is important for children's rooms too โ good sleep depends on darkness, especially during bright Irish summers.
Home Office
โ Vision blinds or roller blindsWorking from home means dealing with screen glare and video call lighting. Vision blinds are ideal โ you can adjust the light level precisely without fully closing the blind, so you stay visible on camera while reducing glare on your screen. Roller blinds with light-filtering fabric are another good option for home offices. If your office faces the street, vision blinds also give you privacy during the day without making the room feel closed off.
Large Windows & Patio Doors
โ Vertical blinds or panel blindsFor wide windows, sliding doors, and floor-to-ceiling glazing, vertical blinds are hard to beat. The slats tilt to control light and privacy, and the whole blind slides to one side for full access to the door. We fit a lot of verticals in the newer apartments in Galway's Docks area, extensions in Oranmore, and the larger estates around Knocknacarra and Castlebar. Panel blinds are a modern alternative for very wide openings โ they slide on tracks and give a clean, contemporary look.
Fabric choices that matter in Ireland
The fabric you choose is just as important as the style of blind. In Ireland's damp climate, the wrong fabric will let you down fast.
PVC & polyester
Best for Irish conditionsMoisture-resistant, easy to clean, won't absorb humidity or develop mould. The go-to choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and any room with condensation issues. Available in roller, vertical, and Perfect Fit styles.
Blackout coated fabric
Excellent for bedroomsThe coating blocks 100% of light and provides a natural moisture barrier. Handles overnight condensation well. Our most popular bedroom fabric across Galway โ especially in west-facing rooms.
Synthetic blends
Good all-rounderModern synthetic fabrics used in vision blinds and some roller blinds handle Irish humidity well. They don't absorb moisture like natural fibres and maintain their shape over years of use.
Cotton & linen
Avoid in damp roomsNatural fibres look lovely but absorb moisture readily. In Irish conditions, cotton and linen blinds can develop mould spots, lose their shape, and start to smell musty. Fine in well-ventilated rooms, but not recommended for kitchens, bathrooms, or condensation-prone windows.
Real wood
Use with cautionReal wood blinds and shutters look stunning but are vulnerable to warping in high-humidity environments. Composite or faux-wood alternatives look identical and handle Irish moisture without any issues. We always recommend composite for bathrooms and coastal properties.
Why made-to-measure beats off-the-shelf
Off-the-shelf blinds from DIY stores might seem like a bargain, but they rarely fit properly. Gaps at the sides let light and drafts in, and the quality of the fabric and mechanisms is generally poor. In Ireland's damp climate, those gaps also let moisture circulate behind the blind, accelerating mould growth.
Made-to-measure blinds are cut to your exact window dimensions. They fit flush, look clean, and perform properly. The difference in appearance and function is significant โ and the cost difference is often smaller than people expect.
